There are a number of private cross-border coach options conveniently located in Terminal 2 of the Hong Kong International Airport. Destinations are not limited to Shenzhen; the coaches also travel to another 109 cities in the Pearl River Delta Region, including Guangzhou, Dongguan, Huizhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, and Macau. From Terminal 1, follow the directions to Terminal 2 and look for the “Transport to Mainland China” signs.
Step 2: Purchase a Coach Ticket to Shenzhen
Ticket Counters: C01–C09, Mainland/Macao Transport Centre (L3, Terminal 2)
Once at the coach ticket purchase windows, finding a ticket won’t be a problem. You will quickly be approached by sales representatives from any of the 4 coach companies at desks C01 – C09.
The Main Bus Routes:
Huanggang (Lok Ma Chau)
(Coach service hours: 06:15 – 00:00)
Huanggang border, located at the foot of Shenzhen’s Central Business District in Futian District, is usually the quickest route to China. This is especially true if traveling to a hotel in the Futian or Luohu Districts. Travelers will need to disembark the coach at the Hong Kong side of the border, with their luggage, pass through immigration, clear customs, and finally board a new coach to the Mainland China side of the border. There, the process is repeated on the China side of the border.
Shenzhen Bay Port
(Coach service hours: 06:50 – 22:30)
The Shenzhen Bay Port is the most convenient route to China for travelers heading to the Shekou, Nanshan, or Bao’an Districts (Shenzhen Airport is in Bao’an). The Shenzhen Bay Port is located in Shekou’s Dongjiaotou area. Fortunately, travelers do not need to disembark at the Hong Kong side in this case, as both customs checkpoints are in the same building.
Shataukok (Shatoujiao)
(Coach service hours: 07:30 – 19:40)
The lesser-known Shataukok, or ‘Shatoujiao’ in Mandarin, may be an option for those heading directly to the Yantiangang Free Trade Zone.
Step 3: Pass HK & Shenzhen Immigration Checkpoints
Once the coaches reach the Hong Kong border, passengers will need to disembark with their luggage, pass through the Hong Kong immigration, and re-board a new coach to travel to the Shenzhen border. Once there, the same process repeats itself as you make your way across the Shenzhen immigration. Finally, as you make your way past the second border and are officially on the Mainland side, make your way to the taxi waiting area and queue for a taxi.
Step 4: Get to the Shenzhen final destination
When the coach arrives in Shenzhen, the last step you’ll need to do is get a taxi from the Shenzhen border to your hotel or destination in Shenzhen.
Summary. The coach bus goes directly to the Hong Kong border. You’ll enjoy a private seat on a coach bus. Once at the border, however, you’ll have to exit and re-board the bus twice while crossing through both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen immigration points. You’ll also need to wait for and take a taxi once you’ve arrived on the Shenzhen side. Thus, riding the coach bus for a cross-border transfer is recommended for travelers on a budget, with plenty of time to spare.
Recommendation: If you’re traveling on a tight budget, then taking a coach from Hong Kong to Shenzhen is your best option. The total cost of travel shouldn’t exceed more than 260 HKD. However, be prepared for a long journey. Waiting in queues, crossing the borders, and then again waiting in queues to re-board the new coach, then finally waiting for the taxi to take you to your destination are all a part of this journey. Make sure to travel light, as you’ll also be carrying your luggage every step of the way.
