Guide To Your Great Wall Of China Visit

by Asia Car Service

If you’re traveling to Beijing for the first time, chances are the Great Wall of China will be the first attraction you’ll visit. Even if you’ve been there already, there are so many sections to see and ways to experience the Wall that you’ll likely find yourself going back to discover new areas and viewpoints.

The Great Wall of China is one of the most impressive feats of ancient engineering and a symbol of China’s long history. Officially, the main Wall stretches 5,500.3 miles (8,851.8 kilometres), crossing deserts, grasslands, mountains, and plateaus. If you include all the branches and sections, the entire network of walls is much longer. No matter how many times you’ve seen it in photos, standing on it in person is a completely different feeling.

For first-time visitors, however, planning a trip to the Wall can seem confusing. There are multiple access points, different levels of difficulty, and varying amounts of walking or climbing depending on the section. To help, here is a practical guide on how to get to the Wall, what to prepare beforehand, and which sections are best to visit.

Getting To The Great Wall Of China

The Great Wall spans several provinces, but the most popular and accessible sections are near Beijing. From the city, you can reach many of these areas in around 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on traffic and the exact section you choose.

The most common ways to get there are by joining a group tour, hiring a private driver, taking public transport (a combination of trains and buses), or using a private car service. Public transport is the most economical, although it often involves multiple changes and navigating crowded stations, while group tours can be convenient but limit your flexibility and time on the Wall.

If you want a more comfortable and time-efficient option, especially if you’re on a tight schedule or traveling with business colleagues, a private car or chauffeur service is ideal. You can be picked up directly at your hotel, choose your preferred section of the Wall, and return at a time that suits your itinerary without worrying about timetables or language barriers.

Some of the most-visited sections near Beijing are Badaling, Mutianyu, Jinshanling, Simatai, and Juyongguan. Each of these offers a slightly different experience, from fully restored and crowded to more peaceful and partially wild.

What You Should Prepare Beforehand

A trip to the Great Wall usually takes the better part of a day. Being well prepared will make your visit much more enjoyable and comfortable. The Wall itself can be steep, exposed to the elements, and quite windy in certain areas, so planning ahead is essential.

Clothing

When visiting the Great Wall of China, it’s best to dress as comfortably as possible. You’ll be doing a fair amount of walking and hiking along the wall.  Some sections can get quite steep. Make sure you have comfortable shoes and bring a sweater or jacket along, in case it gets cold or windy.

Food & Drink

There are restaurants, snack stalls, and small shops at or near most of the popular entry points, but once you are on the Wall itself, the options become limited. Prices in the tourist areas can also be higher than in the city. It’s a good idea to bring a bottle or two of water and some light snacks with you, especially if you plan to do a lot of walking. During the hot months (late spring to early autumn), staying hydrated is crucial.

If you’re traveling with a group or on a corporate outing, some private tours and car services can arrange a simple packed lunch or recommend nearby local restaurants where you can enjoy a meal before or after your visit.

Useful Extras

The Wall can be very sunny and exposed, especially on clear days. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat or cap will protect you from sunburn and glare. In the colder months, gloves, a scarf, and a warm hat are important, as the wind on the Wall can make temperatures feel much colder than in central Beijing.

Comfortable walking shoes with a good grip are strongly recommended because many steps are uneven or steep. If you have knee problems or expect to hike longer sections, a light hiking stick or trekking poles can also be useful.

You may also want to bring tissues, hand sanitizer, and a small portable charger for your phone or camera, as you’ll likely be taking a lot of photos.

The Best Sections To Visit

As mentioned, there are many sections of the Great Wall near Beijing, each with its own character, level of restoration, and degree of difficulty. Here is an overview of some of the most popular and interesting ones.

Less Crowded, but accessible sections

Mutianyu is one of the best choices if you’re looking for a balance between scenery, accessibility, and slightly fewer crowds than Badaling. It has been carefully restored, offers stunning views, and has cable cars and a toboggan run. Families and business travelers alike enjoy this section for its facilities and relatively gentle slopes compared to more rugged parts of the Wall.

Jinshanling is another attractive option, popular among hikers and photographers. It combines restored and partially wild sections and has fewer visitors than the main tourist areas. You can hike between Jinshanling and Simatai (when the trail is open), which offers a full experience of both scenic viewpoints and quieter stretches.

Wild sections

If you’re an experienced hiker and want to see more original, unrestored parts of the Wall, you might consider sections like Jiankou. These areas are steep, rugged, and sometimes unsafe in poor weather conditions, so they are generally not recommended for first-time visitors or those on tight schedules. In some cases, access to wild sections can be restricted or discouraged for safety reasons.

Always check recent information about trail conditions and access before planning a hike on wild sections. If you do go, it’s best to travel with someone who knows the area well or use an experienced local guide to ensure safety.
